Jonesboro Police Department and Local Schools Partner with Project ChildSafe to Offer Free Gun Locks
With the purpose of promoting safe firearms handling and storage practices among firearms owners, the Jonesboro Police Department has recently applied for and received a grant of 500 gun locking devices from Project Childsafe for free distribution to the public.
School resource officers in the Nettleton, Valley View, and Westside school districts plan to make these gun locking devices available free of charge and may also present and distribute gun safety programs and key safety education materials for parents and students.
Though most of the gun locking devices will be available through the local school districts, a portion of them may be available at the Jonesboro Police Department. Parents needing one of the devices should contact the School Resource Officer at their child’s school. Others needing a lock should first call the JPD Front Desk at 870.935.5562 to check for lock availability and instructions on how to receive one.
Since 2003, Project ChildSafe has distributed more than 35 million safety kits to gun owners in all 50 states and five U.S. territories and continues to help its law enforcement partners promote firearms safety by providing educational materials and support services.
Project ChildSafe, a component of the Bush administration's "Project Safe Neighborhoods" gun violence prevention initiative, is supported by the firearms industry, U.S. Dept. of Justice (DOJ) grants, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF).
